How We Help You Learn English

Evaluation of language skills

Certified language assessors use assessment tools based on Canadian Language Benchmarks to evaluate language skills in Speaking, Listening, Reading and Writing.  A benchmark is assigned for each of the four skills.  Assessments are provided in Cambridge, Kitchener-Waterloo and on demand at various other locations.  To book an appointment, please call:

519-621-1621 (YMCA - Cambridge)

519-579-9622 (Kitchener - Waterloo) or

519-740-8797 (Conestoga LINC - Cambridge)

Determination of literacy needs

A special assessment tool has been developed for newcomers who have very little or no education from their home country.  The tool, called the Canadian Language Benchmarks Literacy Assessment, has been translated into 27 languages and as such, literacy skills are measured in the client's mother tongue. Literacy benchmarks are assigned at the end of the assessment.

Conversation Circles

English Conversation Circles are facilitated in all library branches in Cambridge, community centres and at our office location.  It is easy to participate as there is no cost or registration required.

Referral

After collecting all of the information regarding your language level or need for literacy training, goals and preferences, the assessor spends time with you discussing training options.  You may be referred to a LINC (Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada), ELT (Enhanced Language Training), OSLT (Occupation Specific Language Training), ESL (English as A Second Language) program or to  other bridging or occupation-specific training.

Those who cannot go to a class have the option of enrolling in LINC Home Study.

You will receive a profile which explains the benchmark that you achieved and general language level, and you will be given a referral form indicating the right language training program for you.
